Auckland is a relatively small wine producing region. However, the largest wine companies are all based in Auckland. During the last decade region has undergone a major restructuring, with the growth of boutique high quality producers replacing larger lower quality producers.
Wine tourism has rapidly grown in the Auckland region as the number of boutique wineries has grown. Waiheke Island with its scenic beauty and the legendary status of its wines has a must visit destination. In recent years other districts, such as Kumeu, and Henderson, have become important wine tourism centres.
